"Green Phosphor Makes Virtual Worlds Valuable" - Network World

Glasshouse Beta Release

Glasshouse is a gateway which places interactive representations of data into virtual worlds. It can be configured to work with any virtual world that is CICP-enabled. Currently, we are aware of two worlds where this has been tested; Sun's Wonderland and Second Life.

Option 1: Glasshouse in Wonderland

To use our web-based public Wonderland environment, click here. (You will need Sun Java JRE6 or JDK6)

Open Wonderland. Once you get a login prompt, pick any username. No password is required.

If you want to run your own Wonderland server, please follow the instructions here.

Ensure that you have also installed the wonderland-modules as well as Green Phosphor's CICP module which can be found in the wonderland modules-incubator.

Inside Wonderland

To see some examples, use the "CICP" menu, "Start" option; this will generate a green cube. Click it and a title will come up; click the title for a menu. The best option to start with is "oil_net", which will place a 3d histogram into the world, representing net oil production by country and year (from BP's World Oil Stats). Red means a net consumption, and blue a net production. Mousing over any piece of a graph in the world will show the title for it.

Wonderland commands:

  • Press "u" one time to turn off(toggle) gravity, use pgup and pgdn (or "q" and "e") to fly
  • Press "=" a few times to increase your speed ("-" to decrease)
  • Right click and move the mouse to look around the environment. (This is important for looking down at the graphs.)
  • Select "First-person Camera" from the "View" menu for a better perspective (or "c" twice; "c" is used to cycle through cameras)
  • Clicking on graph nodes brings up menus

Option 2: Glasshouse in Second Life

For Second Life users, go here to get the source code for implementing CICP in Second Life.

Getting Glasshouse

Once you have the environment of your choice with CICP properly installed, you are ready to run your own instance of Glasshouse.

Glasshouse runs through Java Web Start and can be accessed here.

When the applet loads, set up your "World Properties" (i.e. hub name), then add any databases you would like to access and then define any graphs you would like to generate from those databases.

You can then save your GQL file by selecting "Save GQL" so that the next time you run the applet you can load your preconfigured databases and graphs.

When you are done with configuration, click "Start Gateway" to launch Glasshouse.

Now when you go into the world of your choice and generate a CICP object, you should see a gateway on the list with the name you provided. Click on it and a new object will generate that will contain a list of the graphs you have defined. Click on a graph title and Glasshouse will generate your data for you.
